royrox asked:

I think it’s almost comical, sometimes when I’m in my sullen mood, that we as a human race try so hard to learn as much as we can and be the best person that we can. We will never use our trivia for anything more than board games, or whitty conversation. Why read news articles, tabloid magazines, text books… when we won’t make any type of impact on anything in our lives. Why not get a job doing something fun that will make enough money to live comfortably and just play video games, or with your dog the rest of your time?? Why do we push ourselves so hard?

  • dukalink6000:

I think only 1% of people have any real effect on the world

  • Alan R:

100 % will make an impact. The degree of that impact will vary from person to person.

  • Nicholas:

I’m afraid that it is impossible to calculate such a percentage. I suppose the influence usually affects those which the person is closest to and it goes down degree by degree. I suggest you search your local library or Barnes and Nobles and read up on the Six degrees of separation in the philosophical section.

  • 13th Floor:

100% of us will make some type of impact. For every person who is born, history(maybe not global, maybe just familial and local) will be forever altered.

  • xjoizey:

we all make an impact on the world one way or another. even if it’s helping one person to be the best person they can be.Just stop worrying about trivial things and enjoy life

  • just wants to know:

At least 100%. To me an impact doesn’t just mean a cure for cancer or ending world hunger. Anyone capable of love or **** has at least a minor impact because just loving and being loved impacts those directly affected. Then they affect someone else and it just cycles.

  • Deirdre H:

I think that’s a fairly depressing viewpoint. Personally, I think that we all make an impact, and that the magnitude and direction of that impact is up to each of us.

Have you helped somebody? If you have, that will have infinite ripples throughout time and space. The more people you help, the larger and farther those ripples will travel. Who knows what a person will remember from a lesson in school? That person might be another Richard Feynman or Linus Torvalds. A man, some years ago taught me the difference between an analog and digital computer, and that affected my career.

Saying that you don’t have an effect is also a way to deny responsibility for the things you do or do not do. Please, PLEASE understand that every act that one does, while in the presence of another does have an impact. It affects the quality of your relationship, and in some manner, even if it’s small, affects that person for the rest of their life.

We all make an impact, no matter how small. However, it is not necessarily by pushing ourselves. We make our impact just by living, being the best we can be in spirit. Most of us do the things you describe because we get enjoyment and satisfaction from doing them. I don’t have to look far to see the impact we have made – we have four daughters, a foster son, six grandchildren.

I will share with you my favorite piece of writing. Maybe it will help you with putting things in perspective. I hope this helps.

  • Boomer Wisdom:

Tough question. Everyone has value and impact from the mere fact that they are taking up space and time. And probably most people have a friend or loved one they share life’s adventures with. And certainly some people get more press and notoriety by doing good or evil things. But that’s only relevant in the tiny world of people.

However, if we’re all still stuck on this rock when the big asteroid hits, or the sun expands into its death throws, all human existence will be for naught. And the Universe won’t care anymore than it does now.
