I come from a rural area on a small Hawaiian island so I find moving to a big city daunting. I have been to Chicago before but have never stayed for an extended period of time. Although I am not naive to city life (I spent a lot of my childhood in NYC and I have done quite a lot of traveling), I would love to have you answer Some questions that would make me feel more comfortable about moving:

What is a safe neighborhood that is not too costly to live in?
As far as big cities go, is it more expensive or cheaper than some?
Where is the best place (or chain of stores) to get groceries?
Is the public transportation good quality?
Focusing more on the metros, are they clean, efficient and cheap?
What fun acitivities are there to do in Chicago?
Where are YOUR favorite places to be in Chicago?

I am considering taking a job in Rolling Meadows, IL, but I want to live in the city. I am considering living around the La Salle/Chicago Ave intersection with a friend, but am worried this is too far away. Where is a good place to live for a 23 year old male looking to have fun in the city while keeping the commute to Rolling Meadows the most manageable? I just don’t want to live in the suburbs.
