Begin The Conversation is a public education initiative sponsored by Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter to encourage individuals to identify and communicate their health care choices. This campaign aims to raise awareness for everyone. At any time, people of any age may be unable to communicate their health care choices as a result of injury or serious illness. This process, called advance care planning, encourages identifying and understanding possible care options, talking about decisions with loved ones and doctors and putting those plans in writing to be ready if needed. Having a plan makes it easier to ensure that your wishes will be honored. Hospice can often be likened to the proverbial ‘elephant in the room’. Our primary goal is to help make talking about it less intimidating for our patients, their families and others who will one day benefit from having a conversation with their loved ones.

– Jane Brody — GUIDE TO THE GREAT BEYOND — Part 1 of 2 — Our show is a discussion of a topic people often want to avoid — end-of-life issues, care, and planning for the inevitable. Jane Brody and Lori Crever talk about the topics families face with end-of-life issues and how to prepare for the end of life — —- a living will – planning a funeral or memorial – families – grief – financial issues – understanding what happens, physically and mentally, when death is imminent – hospice care – recognizing when hand-holding and reassurance are needed – discussing prognoses and treatments with doctors – incorporating spirituality into your life Lori asks Jane to help us think about aging, our abilities to emotionally cope with the end of life. This is a GUIDE to putting your affairs in order and helping your loved ones do the same. In her book Brody has 18 chapters, including “Uncertain Future,” “Living Well to the End,” “Hospice and Palliative Care,” “Spiritual Care,” “What to Say,” “Grief” and “Lasting Legacies.” In her book Brody adds a bit of levity to lessen the intensity of these subjects. A bit of humor, a little chuckle, and a few cartoons can help get through the seriousness of the topics. Preparing for the inevitable when you and family members have your health and mental faculties will help you get through the tough times that could arrive at any moment. You will be better prepared emotionally, physically, and financially to enjoy the time you have left …
